Not far from my soon-to-be former home in unincorporated Walton County is the town of Between, Georgia, the setting of a Joshilyn Jackson novel by the same name. Its name is in reference to the fact that Between lies exactly equidistant from Atlanta and Athens. It also is "between" the county's two largest cities, Loganville and Monroe.
This song is not about this town.
Well, not really. I will admit that driving through Between almost daily to get to work probably sparked the idea, but I have never been in Between any longer than it took to get out.
Driving through Between took me to work at an unincorporated 4-way stop that was home to no more than a couple of churches, a service station, a garbage company, and the world's smallest vet clinic (not really, but it is small). A rather large tree nursery was right down the road, and I bought a Jeep from them once. Suburbia surrounded it, but this area reminded me of places around my home in rural Alabama. These parts used to be rural...maybe they still were, but the golf course community with its luxury homes and the dangerous Highway 316 were not far away.
There was so much not right about this place, rather with many of the people I met there. I realized that there was something not right with me, as well. I had finally reached a goal I had been working towards for years, and it was falling apart around me. Seems that no matter where you go, there you are.
