Behind the Music

Not knowing or understanding what a songwriter was talking about was often frustrating to me. I was raised listening to music that was pretty literal and straight-forward, but my musical tastes expanded as I got older. Over time, the artists I most enjoyed were ones that were less literal with their lyrics. Now, you will even find me listening to songs where the lyrics really have no cohesive narrative (or thought!).

I understand why songwriters are vague. Sometimes, it is because it allows them to work through personal issues without airing out all of their dirty laundry. Other times, it is to allow the listener to bring their own issues and interpretations to the song. It also is simply artistic expression and makes the song worth listening to. As I started writing my own songs, I came to appreciate these motives.

It's a weird place I have to go mentally and emotionally to write songs like this, especially some of the more recent songs. Retracing those steps (to a degree) may be an interesting supplement to the recording, so I hope you enjoy the upcoming posts this week leading up to the EP release on July 24th.
